The Imperial Fund Asset Management team was delighted to attend the TEXPERS 2025 Summer Educational Forum. It was highly enjoyable and educational meeting individuals working across the Texas retirement system. Highlights included hearing from Mayor Renard U. Johnson and hosting our own exhibition booth. We look forward to attending more conferences where we can learn about developments in the space.
Here were 3 key takeaways from the talk:
Longevity - Brent J Davis PHD gave an insightful talk on trends in life expectancy in recent decades. Davis emphasized the importance of considering life expectancy when planning for retirement, as the average American male and female now live to 81 and 84 respectively. He also highlighted trends between economic class and the quality of life retirees live. Factors such as disability, which are more common in lower percentile income groups, can not only reduce quality of life but have significant financial impacts which should be planned for.
Stewardship - We heard from veteran trustees at a panel with Robert Ash, Jerry Don Sutton, and Henry Wilson. The panel emphasized the fiduciary duty of trustees in how funds are spent and the due diligence required to accurately assess a potential investment. It was particularly interesting to learn how trustees differentiate between investment decisions suited to an individual's portfolio, and the appropriate investment decisions for a pension fund portfolio.
Alternatives - As private markets become more accessible, potential investments in private credit are increasingly important points of discussion. The potential introduction of such assets into pension funds will be closely watched. This, combined with increasing adoption of AI in administrative and analytical processes, could be a catalyst for many developments in retirement systems over the next few years.
We are happy to have met so many news peers at this conference, and we look forward to seeing you all again in the future.
